Lab: Galaxies                                                             

 

Purpose: To practice identifying the types of galaxies and to determine some of their characteristics.

 

Materials: Galaxy pictures, textbook, pencil, paper

 

Procedure:

  1. Look at the pictures of the galaxies below
  2. Try to sort the galaxies into three groups: elliptical, spiral and irregular
  3. Answer the questions about the galaxies on your own paper.

1. Make a 3 column table and classify the galaxies as spiral, elliptical and irregular.

2. Draw a star around the number of the photograph that most closely resembles our Milky Way?

3. If motion can be determined, would it be clock-wise or counter-clockwise?

          a. Draw a box around the numbers that are clockwise.

b. Draw a circle around the numbers that are counter-clockwise.

4. From the reading, which type of galaxy has the greatest mass?
